The beverage industry majorly relies on water as the main ingredient. A beverage is usually composed of 85% of water and the remaining non-water components include ingredients like sugar, barley, wheat etc which are water consuming crops. Therefore water contamination can arise through not just the internal water usage systems but also through the agricultural products in which water contamination becomes difficult to trace.
For example, the quality of water is affected if the groundwater is contaminated. Other factors such as temperature increase and presence of nutrients in water may lead to growth of microorganisms such as E. coli. and salmonella. Presence of pollutants in the environment could also be another source of contamination that can impact the health of human beings.
